COMMANDERS CORNER:
Good Day Legionnaires,
I hope everyone is enjoying the weather we are having. Spring is in the air. But of course, this is Wyoming. Make sure you are taking precautions, so you don’t get burnt. The weather can change in just a matter of minutes. Just be mindful of that. May is upon us, and we are going to have another busy month. We have elections coming up this month. So, please, come out and make your vote count. We will also be forming a committee for the by-laws. We are asking that if you are interested in assisting us in changing the by-laws, please get with one of the officers and/or adjutant. Once we have a committee established, we will go over and make the changes that are needed/necessary. We would like to complete this by the end of summer so we can notify everyone of the changes and then take a vote on the by-laws. In case you have not heard, dues will be going up to $60 from $50. The reason behind this is both, state and national have increased the dues by $5 each. If you pay your dues before July, you will pay $50. They have decided if you pay the next three (3) years of dues, you can pay at the $50 mark. This is a one-time deal, and can only be done on-line. It may not be much, but you can save yourself $30. If you have any questions, please get with the adjutant or one of the Post officers. Okay, I think I have the business information completed. Now for some other news. On Monday, 6 May @ 1900, the United Air Force Band will be playing at the Camplex. For those of you who have not had the pleasure of seeing them perform, they are an excellent band. I look forward to seeing you all there. Must register (see below). The week of 12 May is Police Week. In honor of the fallen, there will be a Peace Officer Memorial on 15 May @ 1200. This will be at the Campbell County Sheriff's Office, 600 W. Boxelder Rd. This year will be a surreal year. As most of you know, Wyoming had a Peace Officer (Sgt. Nevada Krinkee), killed in the line of duty on 13 Feburary. Lastly, we will have the Memorial Day Service on 27 May this year at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery. We will be putting flags up at 0700. At 1100, the Memorial Day Service will be at the Gardens, then pick up the flags at 4P.M. I hope you all have a great month. I look forward to seeing everyone. If there are any questions, please let us know.
Clarence E Barry Jr.,Commander, Post 42
SAL NEWS:
We want to thank everyone who came and enjoyed our Brisket dinner. There was a lot going on that night and really appreciate the support. A special thanks to Mark and Marty Stines for sponsoring our happy hour. We also need to thank Mike Lind, Rick McCabe, and Doug Evenson for preparing the brisket. Our first blood drive was a huge success. This blood drive was the 4th pillar we needed to complete for the 4 Pillar Challenge set by the SAL National Commander. A great big THANK YOU to the Auxiliary for making all those homemade goodies for the blood donors. The donors really appreciated that personal touch the Auxiliary provided. The results provided by Vitalant, " We collected 54 units!! Wow!! Great job SAL! We had 53 scheduled". We have begun making plans for Christmas in July at the Buffalo Veteran’s Home. We are hoping to replace a 30’ walking bridge this year. This project will be another multiple trip project and will keep people posted so you can plan when you can help. Please remember to support the Rough Riders. Go to a game or listen on 106.7. Support Post 42 baseball. We will be meeting May 5 this month due to Mother’s Day on May 12. We will meet at noon at the post. Elections and CWF will be the main topics. I want to thank everyone who renewed and recruited new members. We are at 101%. GREAT JOB.
Respectfully submitted, Bill Kern, Adjutant
AUXILIARY NOTES:
Auxiliary Unit 42 is in need of help for Memorial Day breakfast. 2024 Unit 42 District Report Let me start off by thanking all of our Auxiliary members. They have been such an outstanding group of people to achieve our goal of serving our Veterans, their families & our community. In May we installed our new officers. We were in the community with our Poppies and people were glad to see us out and about. Memorial Day we served breakfast and participated in the ceremony at the cemetery. We also hosted our Kentucky Derby party. We decorate hats, get dressed up & bet on the ponies. Last May we even had some of our gentlemen join us in dressing up. Let’s hope they participate again this year. July we help with the Post in doing hamburgers & hot dogs for donations after the parade. During the parade we had some of our Junior members handing out flags & poppies for donations. During the summer several of our members worked on refreshing the bar & kitchen downstairs. September we resumed our regular meetings. October we hosted a Deadwood bus trip to raise money for Girls State. Terry Case also had the honor of presenting a flag to Caroline Rush for becoming a US Citizen. We also hosted a meet & greet with our National Auxiliary President Lisa Williamson. This was a GREAT honor. Carolynn Eddy, chair of our VA&R committee asked some of our care home residents & members to decorate wreaths. November we also changed our Facebook page to: Am.Legion Auxiliary Gillette Wy for our members and for non members you can visit us at Auxil Wood. Please take a look as it is always being updated with activities. December we set up our Giving Tree. We had all tags taken and filled for our National Guard & others. January we hosted Walker Williams. This was held in conjunction with all the entities of our Post. It was the first time we have had a live band in some time so the turn out was minimal but we broke even and those in attendance, had a GREAT time. February we put on a Valentines Dinner. Was a GREAT success. Our committee for Girls State did their due diligence. They meant with schools not only for Girls State but worked with the Post for Boys State. We felt that tag teaming this only made sense. Unfortunately we did not get a single application, this was not due to no effort. These ladies did an outstanding job. March was St Patrick’s day so the Auxiliary provided corned beef & cabbage. April we had our Deadwood trip, yes the 2nd one in 6 months. This has turned out to be such a success. It brings our Post entities together as well as our community. We will be hosting another one in October. Money raised went towards our General Fund. I can’t say enough about our Unit 42. They not only have done the above but they help provide services for funerals whether it be set up, food, serving &/or cleaning up. Our Unit also helps the Post, the SAL & the Club. These ladies have accomplished so much this past year I’m sure I have missed something. It is such an honor to be the President of Unit 42.
Lisa Wagner, Unit 42 President
